Car Trips in The Southwest
Car Trips in The Southwest
The only way to really see the Southwest is by car. The distances are long between towns, the summers are hot, the winters can be cold and while it is a magnificent journey, even drivers who are experienced in other parts of the country will find completely different circumstances pop up. As the old saying goes every thing in the desert either bites, stings or sticks.
Not to cast any aspersions on a road trip but there are things to be aware of and know how to handle. You may not see another person for miles so your own knowledge may save you – literally. In the case of a dust storm, pull off the highway and turn your lights off and wait it out. They dont usually last too long. Flash floods usually give you some warning or at least the radio will alert you. Stick to high areas and dont drive into an area if you cant tell how deep the water is. In any case and even in good weather, let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. Theres cell service but it gets spotty in places. Have some water in the trunk – at least a gallon per person per day. It gets hot out there. If you do get stranded, dont take off walking. Stay with your car but if you do leave it, leave a note and say which direction you went towards. The desert is hot so if youre walking, let your body adapt and dont push it.
Youll need to stay on the watch for rattlesnakes as they love the desert as do scorpions, black widows and brown recluse spiders. If you havent had a tetanus booster in years, get one before you go and leave the perfume at home. The insects love the stuff.
