The Deserts of the Southwest

The deserts of the American Southwest are things of magic, of movies and of some of the biggest skies in the world. They are a cornucopia of things to do and whether a person wants to vacation there, study nature of just experience an amazing part of the world, these deserts are some of the best.

The Mojave is the home of cowboy and Indian culture and the smallest of all the deserts in the Southwest. Youll find it sits in in Northern Arizona, Southern Nevada and parts of Southern California. This is the place to find the Joshua trees which are one of natures most amazing creations. See Death Valley and several other large national parks there. The Great High Basin Desert is in Nevada. Its what is called high desert so theres more rain and it is more lush. Streams and lakes, and beautiful pine forests abound. Check out some of the caves like the ones called Lehman Caves. Everyone loves the Sonoran Desert which stretches from Arizona into Mexico but the most remote and most beautiful is the Big Bend National Park in south Texas. It has everything: vast canyons, desert expanses and all of the Chisos mountains. It one of the last really wild places left in the country. The deserts of the Southwest are all about feeling remote and the true wide open spaces that the cowboys once felt. Its romantic and rugged at the same time.

Every desert is different and they are all worth exploring. When something takes two days in a car to get to, you know you are traveling. Think how easy is now compared to the covered wagons who had to get across those canyons and mountains. arizona
